Assume people Are Good

It's safe to say that if you have ever been on any type of social media platform, you've either interacted with or have seen a "troll". There are also times that sarcastic comments can be taken out of context and you may think someone is trolling when they truly are not. So what is the safest bet when it comes to social media comments or messaging? Just assume that the person responding has good intentions. It's hard to tell the meaning behind someones message because social media is a screen to face interaction. There is no facial response, no tone of voice, no posture. The only thing you are able to read is the text itself. Someone could be trolling you, or they could just be trying to have fun and add a little sarcasm. If you assume that the person responding is good, it eliminates any harsh feelings and it eliminates any unnecessary misunderstanding. Even if the individual is a troll, trolls only want one thing and that's just a reaction. If it comes down to it just don't respond If you don't give them that reaction they will get bored and move on to the next.

  1. I also believe this is the best way to deal with a comment or message that could be either good or bad, depending on how they meant it. I always hope that people do not mean to be rude or hurtful, so I give them the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately there are people out there looking to start trouble and fight. Also, I feel like not responding will help resolve the situation.

  2. This is very insightful. It's so hard to tell for sure what someone is trying to say without any nonverbal cues. I think another point to screen communication is how easy it is to bully someone from behind a screen. Without having to see their reaction, or how it really can hurt them, it's very easy to say something mean without thinking about it.
